Driving forward sustainable mobility at the university

The university's climate protection management team has been strengthened in the area of sustainable mobility.

The university's climate protection management team has been strengthened in the area of sustainable mobility.

Together with the energy transition, the mobility transition - i.e. the conversion of the transport infrastructure in conjunction with the change in our own mobility habits - is one of the major components for achieving global climate protection targets. A look at our university's greenhouse gas balance shows that we still have a lot of room for improvement.

The area of everyday mobility accounted for around 20% of the university's total emissions in 2022. 4,470 t CO2-equivalents are attributable to everyday mobility and the vehicle fleet of the university. Everyday mobility is an area that the university can only influence to a limited extent due to the individual mobility behaviour of university members. However, the university can promote low-emission and sustainable everyday mobility through structural incentives. These measures will be necessary to achieve climate neutrality in 2030.

Accordingly, the university's climate protection concept comprises six measures and 27 sub-measures in the area of everyday mobility. In order to drive forward the implementation of the measures, an additional staff position has been added to the climate protection management team. The National Climate Initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is funding this staff position until May 2026.

The following tasks are planned in the area of everyday mobility for 2024:

  • Further expansion of the bicycle infrastructure (e.g. 370 new covered parking spaces are currently being built on campus Haarentor)
  • Campaigns to raise awareness of climate-friendly mobility (e.g. photo competition, participation in “Stadtradeln”, zip code breakfast)
  • Mobility survey to determine emissions and to obtain information on the mobility behaviour of university members
  • Networking with public transport providers and municipalities
  • Creation of a mobility concept for ICBM Terramare (Wilhelmshaven)
  • Creation of an information paper on the topic of parking space management
  • Offer bicycle leasing for employees (the framework conditions for this are currently being created by the state of Lower Saxony)

is a member of the university's climate protection management team and contact person for the area of sustainable mobility.
