New Project: DAAD Alumni Programme “Open Energy Modelling”

Two regional workshops will be organized in Ghana in 2025 and in Colombia in 2026 to meet and discuss challenges and opportunities for open source energy modelling tools in an African and Latin American context – and of course to build or refresh regional PPRE networks.

Two regional workshops will be organized in Ghana in 2025 and in Colombia in 2026 to meet and discuss challenges and opportunities for open source energy modelling tools in an African and Latin American context – and of course to build or refresh regional PPRE networks.

With our new DAAD-funded project, we are able to organize and conduct two workshops on “Open Energy Modelling” and to invite several alumni to the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani, Ghana, in 2025, and to the University of Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia, in 2026. The workshops will address specific regional challenges and opportunities in energy planning and policy for the African and Latin American contexts. The focus is on imparting knowledge and skills through theoretical lectures and practical exercises in energy system modelling with PyPSA (Python for Power System Analysis), an open source tool for simulating and optimizing energy systems. The required basic knowledge in Python programming and a short introduction into PyPSA will be provided in advance in an online preparatory course. The workshop will be embedded in an extensive social programme that will provide space for regional and professional networking.

The seminar is closely linked to another DAAD-funded project "Sustainable Energy Education - Developing Exchange between Continents" (SEEDexchange 2024 - 2027), which strengthens cooperation between partner organizations from Ghana, Colombia and Germany. The aim of SEEDexchange is to expand knowledge about renewable energies and integrate it into local contexts through student and teacher exchanges, joint courses and living labs. You can read about the kick-off event of SEEDexchange here.

The first event will take place on September 13th – 20th, 2025 in Sunyani, Ghana. So, please save the date – we are looking forward to meeting you there!
