Laura Arias (SuRE 23-25) reports on recent Solarcamp event in Oldenburg.
From June 24 to July 12, 2024, several photovoltaics enthusiasts gathered in Oldenburg for an exciting two-week Solarcamp. The air was charged with energy as participants from diverse backgrounds, including four students from the SURE program and a former EMRE student, immersed themselves in the world of solar power.
The first week kicked off with three days of theoretical training, first led by Jonas Stührenberg (PPRE 2012-14) and Thomas Schmidt (PPRE-Lecturer ‚Solar Meteorology) from the Oldenburger Energiegenossenschaft, covering the energy transition and solar basics. We learned about career opportunities from a representative of the Handwerkskammer, following by PV topics such as module types, wiring methods, electrical safety instructions, and the installation and wiring of PV modules.
We got our hands dirty installing balcony PV and mounting PV panels on practice roofs. We climbed roofs, wired inverters, adjusted tiles, and above all, had fun securing those modules under the summer sun, all while enjoying delicious vegan lunches from VegansForFuture Oldenburg.
In the second week, many of us embarked on internships with local companies. I was lucky to join EWE Service Partner GmbH, shadowing their electricians as they installed solar systems in private homes. We gained practical experience in house wiring, mounting PV panels on roofs, and installing battery storage and wallbox systems. This hands-on experience brought theoretical concepts to life as we calculated energy production, grid feeding, and storage capacities.
But it wasn't all work and no play. Movie nights and group barbecues kept the energy high and friendships flowing. By the end of the two weeks, we gathered to celebrate our achievements as we were certified as electrotechnically instructed persons (EuP). Armed with new skills, friendships, and a passion for clean energy, we left the Solarcamp ready to shine and looking forward to the success of a second Solarcamp in 2025.
