Orientation week for first semester students

Dear first semester students, welcome to the Institute of Chemistry!

On behalf of all lecturers, staff and students at the Institute, we would like to welcome you and are delighted that you have decided to study chemistry in Oldenburg! To make the start of your studies as pleasant as possible, we invite you to the orientation week (07.10.2024 - 11.10.2024), during which you will have the opportunity to get to know the institute, your fellow students and lecturers. You will also receive valuable information that will make it easier for you to start studying chemistry and help you find your way around quickly.

We wish you a good start, lots of fun and success in your studies!

Niko Kruse Awarded Poster Prize by the European Physical Society

Niko Kruse, a doctoral student in the junior research group led by Dr. Lars Mohrhusen at the Institute of Chemistry, was awarded a best poster prize at the European Conference on Surface Science (ECOSS) in Harrogate, UK. ECOSS is one of the major european conferences for surface physics and chemistry. Niko presented the results of his master's thesis, in which he developed a new synthesis route for two-dimensional titanium sulfide nanoparticles on metal surfaces and comprehensively studied the structure of these 2D nanomaterials. The awarded results were achieved in collaboration with the group led by Prof. Jeppe V. Lauritsen at Aarhus University in Denmark.

The Institute of Chemistry at the Entdecker*innentage 2024

On May 31 and June 1, the Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences Discovery Days took place at the Wechloy campus. Staff and students at the Institute were delighted that so many young and old explorers attended these two days, took part in the numerous activities and thus gained an insight into the subject as well as the work, research and teaching at the Institute of Chemistry.

Research: Turning carbon dioxide into useful chemicals

Harnessing the power of the sun to convert the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into useful chemicals - that is the goal of Dr. Lars Mohrhusen's junior research group. The international team is pursuing a particularly sustainable approach: the researchers are planning to develop precious metal-free catalysts that chemically activate the rather inert greenhouse gas with the help of sunlight. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the Su2nCat-CO2 project over the next six years with around 2.6 million euros under the SINATRA funding guideline
