Description
This seminar introduces students to central methods and signals used in psychophysiology through the applied topic of human echolocation. Using echolocation as a coherent case study, the course examines how perception emerges from the interaction of sound, movement, bodily state, and neural processing.
Students explore how humans generate and control echolocation clicks, which acoustic information is available in returning sounds, how self-generated actions influence sensory processing, and how echolocation is learned and used in controlled and everyday environments. These questions provide a framework for introducing methods including psychophysics, acoustic analysis, EMG, motion tracking, EEG, fMRI, electrodermal activity, heart rate, respiration, and ambulatory assessment.
A particular focus lies on the interpretation of psychophysiological signals. Students learn what different methods can contribute, why physiological measures are often ambiguous, and why context, experimental design, and multimodal measurement are essential for meaningful inference. Problem-oriented learning, article-based discussions, and study-design exercises are used to connect methodological principles to concrete research questions.
