Description

This seminar examines women’s work and labour in the Early Modern Period with a particular focus on theoretical approaches to the topic. Rather than simply reconstructing what women did, we will ask how historians have approached the question of women’s labour and why these approaches matter. What counts as “work” in historical analysis, and how do definitions of labour intersect with gender, economy, and social structures? How have different methodologies—ranging from social and economic history to gender theory and feminist historiography—shaped the narratives we tell about women’s work?
By engaging with these questions, we will critically examine how the history of women’s labour has been written, challenged, and redefined. We will also consider the silences in the sources, the problem of visibility and invisibility, and the ways in which categories like “productive” and “reproductive” labour have been theorised.

This seminar will be held in English.
