A new class of extremely thin materials and their unusual properties are at the centre of a research project that has now been approved at the University of Oldenburg. Physicist Prof Dr Christian Schneider has been awarded top-class funding from the European Research Council (ERC) totalling around two million euros over five years for his ‘Dual Twist’ project. Together with his team, he wants to develop special experimental set-ups to elucidate the special properties of the materials under investigation with the help of light and thus prepare their application in novel quantum technologies. The ERC Consolidator Grant is intended to support excellent scientists in Europe with innovative research and to consolidate their scientific independence. From 2313 applications, the ERC has now selected 328 projects for funding, 67 of which are in Germany.
