Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows users of the university library with a valid library card to borrow books or order copies of articles or book chapters (that are not listed in ORBISplus) from other libraries.

Interlibrary Loan in Special Operating Mode

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is offering services again. For additional info see the GBV website (German only).

Elsevier Titles

During the ongoing negotiations between the DEAL consortium and Elsevier, the publisher restricted access to its e-journals (journal list) to publications dating before Jan. 1, 2018. Current titles are not accessible.

To secure access to current publications nonetheless, the university library offers a document delivery service  free of charge.

Who can order?

All library users with a valid library card can use interlibrary loan services.

How about E-Books?

E-books cannot be ordered via interlibrary loan.

How much does it cost?

In accordance with the Gebührenordnung für die Bibliotheken des Landes Niedersachsen (Regulation on Fees for the Libraries in the State of Lower Saxony) a fee of € 1.50 will be charged for each interlibrary loan request. This fee must be paid even when the request cannot be met.

How to place an order

To order an interlibrary loan, a user ID and password are required. These access data are not identical with the number of your library card and the corresponding password. To purchase access data, login to your library account and follow the link interloan pincodes.

To place an order:

  • Start a new search in the GVK GBV - Union Catalogue.
  • Select the title you wish to borrow.
  • In the "full title"-view select either "loan request" or "order copy" from the options in the top right hand corner.
  • To place your order you will be asked for identification. Enter the access data (user ID and password) that you purchased (see above).

When and where to pick up your Interlibrary Loan

Expect a delivery time of ca. ten work days when ordering a book, and of five work days when ordering a photocopy.

Photocopies and most books/media must be picked up at the circulation desk in the library (valid library card required). Interlibrary loans will not be delivered to a university or home address. The libray will notify you via mail when an ILL order is available.

In certain cases (mostly rare and old titles), books can only be used in the Multimedia Centre's reading room (level ZW4) in the Central Library on Haarentor Campus. The multimedia centre is open Mo to Fri, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Current opening hours.

Interlibrary Loan orders using Account and Transaction Numbers

University members may use their account and transaction numbers to pay for an interlibrary loan order. Access codes are available at the university library's secretariat:

  • Email:
  • Phone: 0441 798-4001

If you wish to cover additional ILL cost (large number of copies, international ILL) contact the ILL services

  • Phone: 0441 798-4030

Special ILL / International ILL

For international ILL orders and for special ILL orders (media not listed in GVK other union catalogs) the online form must be used.

Legal Basis

The legal ILL regulations and the regulations on library fees in Lower Saxony are available in German only.

Alternative: Document Delivery Service subito

The document delivery serice subito offers quick delivery of books or journal articles within a selectable time span at a charge. Subito orders will be fulfilled regardless of the availability of a title in the university library.
