How do we check our goals?

Exam

There are various gases in the air.

There is too much of certain gases in the air. For example, through exhaust gases from cars or chimneys. This causes climate change. One gas, for example, is CO2.

We check every 2 years for the university: How much gas was bad for the climate?

In 2022 there was the first check over the years 2019 and 2020.

In 2020 there were less gases from the uni than in 2019. One reason was Corona. Many students studied at home and took courses on the internet. That is why the university used less energy.

There were most exhaust gases from heating in all buildings. There were also a lot of emissions from travelling. For example: because cars and planes need a lot of energy.

In 2022, there were more exhaust gases from the university again than in 2019. One reason was that more people drove cars. And there is a new machine since 2021: the machine makes electricity and heat from natural gas.

It's bad for the climate that there were more exhaust gases again. We want to work harder for our goals so that there are fewer exhaust gases from the university.

Reports

We write reports about our development:

  • What have we done for climate protection?
  • What goals have we achieved?

The first report about the goals was in 2007. The current report is about the years 2020 and 2021.

Network HochNiNa

We work together with other universities and colleges in the: Sustainability Network of Universities in Lower Saxony. That's HochNiNa for short.

Since 2018, staff from the universities who are concerned about sustainability have been meeting.

All universities and colleges are different. That's why they have different priorities and goals for sustainability. They also have expertise in different areas.

In the network, universities and colleges can exchange ideas.

They can learn from each other and develop new ideas.

There are various working groups for this purpose. Together, the universities want to:

  • make the topic of sustainability known at universities.
  • Achieve more sustainability at all universities in Lower Saxony.
