Julie Lüpkes

Julie Lüpkes is a media studies scholar and focuses on digital educational media and their development, particularly in the case of technology start-ups in the field of education. She primarily uses qualitative, discourse-analytical and media ethnographic methods and positions herself in the field of Critical Data Studies and Science and Technology Studies. She has also conducted research on gamification, datafication, mediatization and TikTok.

Curriculum vitae

Julie Lüpkes has been working as a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Education in the "Digital Education in Schools" department since January 2024. In her dissertation, she focuses on the genesis of Educational Technologies (EdTech), using media ethnographic methods to research an EdTech start-up's implementation of educational concepts in algorithmic environments.

After completing her training as a digital and print media specialist (2013 to 2016), she completed her Bachelor's (2019) and Master's (2022) degrees in media studies at the Technical University and the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig. From August 2022 to December 2023, she taught and researched at the University of Bremen at the ZeMKI in the "Datafication and Mediatisation" lab under Prof. Dr. Hepp. In her master's thesis, she researched the significance and curricular integration of Critical Data Studies in undergraduate media studies programmes. 

From 2019 to 2022, she worked as a student assistant in the BMBF-funded joint research project "Data For and In Education" (DATAFIED) on datafication through learning software at the Leibniz-Institut für Bildungsmedien | Georg-Eckert-Institut, where she also supported the research projects "Education, Technology and Inequality after Corona" (ETIC) and "Learning Culture in Digital Transformation" (LernDiWa).
