Linguistics offers the following courses for students with advanced knowledge and graduates:
Linguistics PhD Colloquium
This colloquium is designed to be interdisciplinary. Doctoral candidates in German, English, Slavonic and Dutch studies present their doctoral theses at various stages of the research process: at the outset, during the course of their research, and towards the end.
The time and venue of the colloquium can be found in the course catalogue.
PhD Seminar
In addition to the colloquium, a special seminar for doctoral candidates is held each semester. The programme is tailored to the participants’ preferences. When led by visiting lecturers, it tends to take the form of a block seminar; when led by lecturers from Oldenburg, it traditionally consists of weekly sessions.
The time and venue of the seminar can be found in the course catalogue.
Graphemic Reading Circle
A reading circle has formed around the research focus ‘Graphemics/Script Grammar’. Those interested, and in particular those who wish to write their thesis – Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD – in this field, meet regularly to read and discuss academic texts together.

Master’s Programme in Language Sciences
Students who are not pursuing a career in teaching and therefore do not intend to obtain a Master of Education can enrol on a new Master’s programme in Language Sciences. This is a joint programme run by the University of Oldenburg and the University of Bremen. Thanks to the large number of staff involved from both universities, the programme offers students a wide range of opportunities.
You can find further details here.
North-West German Linguistic Colloquium (NWLK)
Once a year, linguists from all departments of philology at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, the University of Bremen and Jacobs University Bremen meet to hold a joint colloquium. Here, the latest research questions and findings are presented and discussed. In December 2010, the NWLK took place in Oldenburg.
