Contributions to the history of German studies
Oldenburg (17.01.11) "Contributions to the History of German Studies" is the title of a new book series published by Hirzel-Verlag in Stuttgart. It is jointly edited by Uwe Meves from the University of Oldenburg and his colleague Jens Haustein from Jena.
The volume "Germanistik in Prag und Jena - Universität, Stadt und Kultur um 1900. Der Briefwechsel zwischen August Sauer und Albert Leitzmann" by Jeannette Godau (University of Hohenheim) has now been published. At the centre of her study is the correspondence between the Prague Germanist August Sauer (1855-1926) and his Jena colleague Albert Leitzmann (1867-1950). Their correspondence, spanning a good 30 years, sheds light on academic, cultural and private aspects of scholarly life in Prague and Jena at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The first volume, which will follow in a few weeks' time, is dedicated to the "Discovery of the early modern period". Edited by Marcel Lepper and Dirk Werle, it will examine the question of how the "transitional epoch" of the early modern period was integrated into the changing constellations of German studies in terms of literary and linguistic history.
