Obituary: Eske Brören

It is with quiet sadness that we bid farewell to our esteemed colleague, Eske Brören.

Eske Brören had been working as an administrative assistant at the Institute for German Studies since 16 October 2000. For many years, she was also employed in the School’s Dean’s Office, where she supported the deans and the Academic Committee and championed the interests of teaching and learning at our School.

Eske Brören had deep ties to the Institute for German Studies and Carl von Ossietzky University: she had been studying German and History since October 1995 and, after completing her degree, joined the administration of the Institute for German Studies. Since the Institute for German Studies was founded on 1 April 2003, she served on the institute council as a representative of technical and administrative staff. She was a full member of the Faculty Council on several occasions and also regularly contributed to committee work in other contexts.

Eske Brören felt a special connection to the Institute for German Studies. She familiarised herself thoroughly and precisely with a wide range of topics and worked with great dedication for the benefit of the Institute, its members and the students. In her role within the Dean’s Office for Academic Affairs, too, she was of great value to our School and was an important and highly valued member of staff. The School, the Dean’s Office for Academic Affairs and, above all, the Institute for German Studies were far more to her than just a place of work.

Eske Brören was also actively involved beyond her professional duties. She founded the S.O.S. Samtpfoten charity and served as its Chair for many years. It was her express wish that, on the occasion of her funeral, no flowers or wreaths be sent and that donations be made instead to the S.O.S. Samtpfoten charity.

With the passing of Eske Brören, we have lost a valued and dedicated colleague. We would have wished with all our hearts that she had been granted more time. We will remember her not only as an important part of our Institute, but also as someone who cared deeply – for the Institute, the School and the people she worked with.
