Prof Dr Mario Dunkel
Mario Dunkel is Professor of Music Education with a focus on transcultural music education at the Institute of Music at the University of Oldenburg (UOL). He studied music, English and American Studies in Dortmund, Atlanta and New York. In 2014, he completed his doctorate in American Studies/Cultural Studies at TU Dortmund University. In 2017, he took up the position of Junior Professor of Music Education with a focus on transcultural music education at the Institute of Music at UOL. He was appointed university professor in March 2023.
His research focus includes music education and transcultural music education, connections between music and politics as well as cultural and musicological research on jazz and popular music. He is the author of The Stories of Jazz: Narrating a Musical Tradition (2021), co-editor of Popular Music and Public Diplomacy: Transnational and Transdisciplinary Perspectives (2019 with Sina A. Nitzsche) and a special issue of the journal Popular Music on "Popular Music and Populism" (2022, with Melanie Schiller) as well as a member of the editorial boards of Jazz Education in Research and Practice and Jazz Research Journal. He was Principal Investigator of the international research project "Popular Music and the Rise of Populism in Europe" (Volkswagen Foundation, 2019-2023) and has headed the joint project "Digitality - Diversity - Producing: Practices of Popular Music in Schools and Further Education" (BMBF, 2023-2026) since 2023.
