Research network for popular music appoints Susanne Binas-Preisendörfer as president

Prof Dr Susanne Binas-Preisendörfer, professor of "Music and Media" at the university, has been appointed president of the newly founded German-speaking branch of the "International Association for the Study of Popular Music" (IASPM).

Prof Dr Susanne Binas-Preisendörfer, lecturer in "Music and Media" at the university, has been appointed President of the newly founded German-speaking branch of the "International Association for the Study of Popular Music" (IASPM).

The association is dedicated to the academic study of popular music worldwide - from its beginnings at the end of the 18th century to the present day. At its centre are local, regional and transnational forms of popular music as well as influences from globalisation and medialisation. A central concern of the IASPM is the networking of research and exchange with representatives of artistic practice, cultural policy, the music industry and the media. The main focus is on anchoring popular music in research and teaching at universities and in research funding bodies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Binas-Preisendörfer studied musicology and cultural studies at Humboldt University Berlin, where she also completed her doctorate and worked as a research assistant. Before taking up the professorship in Oldenburg, she worked as an author, cultural organiser and cultural consultant, including as an expert for the German Bundestag's Enquete Commission on Culture in Germany. In 2010, Binas-Preisendörfer published the results of her habilitation project "Sounds in the age of their medial availability - pop music on global markets and in local contexts".

Her research focus includes the theory and history of mediatised forms of music and culture, music and globalisation, transculturality, music and migration, youth cultures and popular music, cultural and creative industries as well as cultural and art policy.
