About us

In School III – Linguistics and Cultural Studies, research and teaching focus on analysing and interpreting language, literature, art, music, and everyday culture. The school benefits from a remarkable combination of philologies with cultural studies and arts-related disciplines and a diverse range of interdisciplinary options. This also includes participation in a university-wide initiative to establish the  Digital Social Sciences and Humanities (DSSH).

The Institute of Music at the University of Oldenburg is one of the largest music institutes in Lower Saxony. It brings together musicological, music-pedagogical, and artistic‑practical perspectives in both research and teaching. The institute is characterized by a close integration of musicology, music education, and music practice, and it offers a broad spectrum of study programmes for teacher training as well as for subject‑specific academic degrees. Central themes are music in social contexts, musical participation, digitalisation, hearing research, cultural‑historical perspectives, and the analysis of musical practices ranging from school instruction to popular and transcultural settings. A further defining feature is the link between science and artistic practice, which is reflected in numerous projects and collaborations with cultural institutions.
