International Curriculum

The BA degree programme is part of a diverse global network. This is reflected in the range of courses offered.

  • Beginning in the first semester, English language lectures provide students with first insights in the context of the basic module lecture series “Inter- und transdisziplinäre Perspektiven der Geschlechterforschung” (“Inter- and Transdisciplinary Perspectives of Gender Studies”) (gen020/gen022).
  • This is continued in the second semester module “Transnational Perspectives in Gender Studies”, parts of which are offered English and in cooperation with visiting scholars. One long-standing cooperation in this context is with Prof. Dr. Sheila Meintjes from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa – since 2015, Prof. Dr. Paula Banerjee from the University of Calcutta participates on a regular basis.
  • The PB-Modul (area of specialisation module) “Forced Migration – Gendered Perspectives in Theory and Praxis”, which is also offered in English, is directed at students of all subjects, but also includes a consecutive tutorial specifically for students of Gender Studies.
  • At irregular intervals, there are study trips abroad that offer further possibilities for specialisation. In 2013, the destination was Johannesburg, South Africa with the topic “Gender, Memory and Transformation in Post-Apartheid South Africa”; in 2016, the destination was London, Canada with the topic “Family Violence and Migration – A Community-based Approach for Prevention and Intervention”; in 2017 in Fez, Morocco, the topic was “Women’s Voices in the Mediterranean and Africa: Movements, Feminisms, and Resistance to Extremisms”; and for the 2019 trip to Fez the topic was “Today’s Islamic Feminisms: National and Transnational Perspectives”.

Additionally, students are invited to actively participate in the international meetings and conferences that the ZFG (co-)hosts. On a regular basis, these involve unique offers for students such as special workshops with renowned scholars.
