Solidarity with Ukraine

The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg is deeply shocked by the war in Ukraine and expresses its solidarity.

“Horrified and filled with great concern, we see the images that reach us these days. Our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people, not least with the employees, scientists and students of our partner university, the National Ivan Franko University of Lviv,” asserted University President Prof. Dr Ralph Bruder. The University of Oldenburg condemns the war of aggression waged by the Russian leadership and joins the statements issued by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Following the tradition of its namesake, the unwavering democrat, pacifist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ossietzky, the University of Oldenburg is committed to science that is both transparent and socially responsible. It sees itself as a cosmopolitan university that lives and breathes internationality. Its name seeks to preserve the memory of an individual who fought uncompromisingly against militarism, nationalism and violations of the rule of law.

There are numerous students and several employees of Ukrainian nationality at the University of Oldenburg. “Our heartfelt sympathy, our unlimited solidarity and our support go out to them,” emphasizes President Bruder. “These students and employees can turn to the University's International Office for counselling and help,” adds Prof. Dr Karsten Speck, Vice President for Instruction and International Affairs.

The University of Oldenburg is in contact with its partner university in Ukraine, and continuously monitors the situation and developments on the ground. We will assist Ukrainian students and scientists in need to the best of our ability.
