"Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." |

Without taxonomy to give shape to the bricks, and systematics to tell us how to put them together, the house of biological science is a meaningless jumble." |

Evolution is the paradigm under which all research in biology operates, with systematics and taxonomy bringing structure to the paradigm. The major theme of our research is the incorporation of a phylogenetic perspective to help understand a wide variety of biological phenomena. A little bit of “tree thinking” often reveals surprising answers. At present, we are applying this theme to the following main areas using a diverse variety of modern methods:
- Aquatic organisms

- Chemical ecology

- Evolutionary morphology

- Metazoan phylogeny

- Supertrees and phyloinformatics
