Research

"Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution."
Without taxonomy to give shape to the bricks, and systematics to tell us how to put them together, the house of biological science is a meaningless jumble."

Evolution is the paradigm under which all research in biology operates, with systematics and taxonomy bringing structure to the paradigm. The major theme of our research is the incorporation of a phylogenetic perspective to help understand a wide variety of biological phenomena. A little bit of “tree thinking” often reveals surprising answers. At present, we are applying this theme to the following main areas using a diverse variety of modern methods:

  • Aquatic organisms
    • more information
  • Chemical ecology
    • more information
  • Evolutionary morphology
    • more information
  • Metazoan phylogeny
    • more information
  • Supertrees and phyloinformatics
  • Public understanding of science
    • more information
