Currently, I am conducting research on a new method for non-invasive deep brain stimulation for the treatment of motor and psychiatric symptoms in Parkinson's disease patients as part of a Joint MD/PhD program. Both, the simulation of the treatment and the clinical application of the method, are part of the project. The project is an international cooperation with the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Groningen under the direction of Prof. Dr. A. Aleman, the Department of General Psychology (Prof. Dr. C. S. Herrmann) and the Department of Neurology in Oldenburg (Prof. Dr. K. Witt). Both, basic and clinical research questions are addressed.

Furthermore, I study different parameters of MR examination and their changes in Parkinson's disease.

In parallel, I am working in the university outpatient clinic for Parkinson's patients at the University Clinic for Neurology Oldenburg.

I joint the neurology research group in 2019. Since 2020, I have been working on a doctoral thesis project on neuropsychological impairments, such as memory performance, in people with multiple sclerosis as a doctoral fellow of the Hertie Foundation.

I am also active in the research working group of the Young Neurologists of the German Society of Neurology.

Research

For my MD/PhD project, I investigate new methods of new non-invasive neurostimulation for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric symptoms in Parkinson’s Disease.

Parkinson‘s Disease (PD) is characterized by a loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra with a consecutive dysfunction in the basal ganglia loops connecting the basal ganglia with cortical areas which are involved in motor execution, cognitive and limbic functions. It is a neuropsychiatric disorder and both, motor and neuropsychiatric symptoms are treated by dopamine replacement therapy. A more invasive but very effective treatment option is the invasive deep brain stimulation (DBS). As it is an operative technique, it includes severe side-effects of open brain surgery. Therefore, we are investigating non-invasive methods for deep brain stimulation, especially a new approach called transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS). The first part of the current project is dedicated to the general principles and the simulation of tTIS using a montage. The goal is to simulate focal stimulation of deep brain regions involved in the pathology of PD with tTIS. In the next step, the simulation will be translated to PD patients to investigate the effects of tTIS on motor and non-motor symptoms.

In the past, I have studied the effects of multiple sclerosis on cognitive functions such as memory performance and attention. With the help of various questionnaires and extensive neuropsychological testing, we detected and related those to various influencing factors, such as sleep and mood. Special attention was paid to specific domains of memory performance in MS patients. We compare these with a healthy control group in a controlled study design.

This was preceded by projects on the morphological changes of the brain in old age. I used special software to compare the volume of grey and white matter in different age groups based on cMRI images. Of particular interest was the cerebellum, which was additionally analysed by specific software. Furthermore, I assigned the changes to functional networks.

Another research focus is the effects of obesity on neuronal plasticity, which are investigated by functional imaging.
