"Golden Brain" for science slammers

Presenting a complex research topic in just ten minutes in an entertaining way - six young scientists rose to this challenge at the university's 7th Oldenburg Science Slam in the sold-out Exerzierhalle. The prize for the best presentation, the "Golden Brain", as well as an honorarium of 150 euros from the Graduate Academy for his presentation went to Jannik Ehrich, a doctoral student in Theoretical Physics.

Second-placed Laura Wolter, a doctoral student at the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM), was delighted to receive 100 euros in prize money from the Research Centre Neurosensory Science. Jonna Wagner, a Master's student of environmental modelling, came third and received a subscription to the magazine "Spektrum der Wissenschaft".

Ehrich secured the favour of the audience, who decided in the end with varying degrees of applause, with a presentation on his doctoral thesis on "How information drives microscopic machines". The topics of the other "science slammers" ranged from extreme weather to marine bacteria, the electricity market design of the future and typhoons to the biographical challenges faced by sports teachers.

For the first time in the programme of the Science Slam was the "Power Point Karaoke": two professors present each other's lecture - spontaneously and without knowing the topic. The historian Prof. Dr Gunilla Budde and the biochemist Prof. Dr Karl-Wilhelm Koch demonstrated great talent for improvisation. Prof Dr Jutta Kretzberg also "dared" to take to the stage from among the professors: out of competition, the sensory physiologist delivered an "Ode to the leech" in her science slam contribution.

The event is organised by the Research Centre Neurosensory Science, the Graduate Academy and the Graduate Schools for Humanities and Social Sciences (3GO) and for Science and Technology (Oltech) at the University of Oldenburg. The Science Slam is organised in co-operation with the Oldenburg State Theatre.
