Scholarships - not just for high-flyers

Studying costs time, energy and, of course, money. A scholarship can help to lighten the load - and university experts can provide the necessary advice.

Studying costs time, energy and, of course, money. A scholarship can help to lighten the load - and university experts can provide the necessary advice.

In addition to the obvious financial benefits, you often have the opportunity to get to know other scholarship holders as well as the sponsors. On top of that, you can add the scholarship to your CV. The best thing is that you don’t have to be an academic high-flyer to get one.

A popular scholarship is the national scholarship programme (Deutschlandstipendium): scholarship holders receive €300 euro per month for one year, half of which is paid by a private sponsor and the other half by the Federal Government. The programme aims to support talented students, enable them to achieve outstanding results and encourage them to get involved in social and community activities alongside their studies. At the University of Oldenburg, particular consideration is given to educational background and family circumstances when awarding the scholarships.

In Germany, there are 13 government-supported organisations that support young, talented students. At the University of Oldenburg, each of these organisations has a lecturer representative, who provides information about funding opportunities and application procedures. An overview is available online. You can also talk to students who have received scholarships from these funding organisations and hear about their experiences. The university’s Servicepoint Scholarships would be more than happy to put you in touch with them on request.

Several programmes for the final stretch of your studies

Another potential source of funding is the Lower Saxony State Scholarship (Landesstipendium Niedersachen), which is specifically for students of all consecutive Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. Special achievements and social criteria are also considered when allocating the scholarships, in addition to overall grades. This scholarship is awarded each winter semester in the form of a one-time payment of €500.

And then there is the Dr H.C. Peter Waskönig Foundation, which offers half-year scholarships exclusively for Oldenburg students who have demonstrated outstanding ability, initiative and responsibility. These scholarships are primarily intended for students who are nearing the end of their studies. Scholarships awarded by the Dr Dettling Foundation are also available to support students in the final phase of their studies.

For students of Business Education, there is also the support programme set up by the Anna Magull Foundation. Since there are a lot of scholarships and support programmes available, it is advisable to discuss the possibilities with one of the university’s experts. The Servicepoint Scholarships offers consultation hours by appointment. You can also contact Studentenwerk’s financial support services; they would be more than happy to help you find the right support programme for you.
