After two years of refurbishment, the university swimming pool has reopened today. Students, staff and members of the public are delighted to have the opportunity to go swimming, train or simply splash around during their breaks.
Brighter, friendlier, the latest technology and better acoustics: the university swimming pool has been completely refurbished over the past two years. The university has provided the costs totalling around 3.8 million euros from its own funds. The pool, which will be open to the public again from next Monday, 14 October, was officially reopened today in the presence of Jörg Stahlmann, Vice President for Administration and Finance, Alexandra Busch-Maaß, Deputy Head of Ems-Weser State Construction Management and Prof. Dr Thomas Alkemeyer, Director of the Institute of Sport Science. The programme included demonstrations and hands-on activities from the Institute of Sport Science.
"With the renovated swimming pool, our Institute of Sport Science and our students have an excellent sports facility. As a university, we also offer an attractive programme for all university members and the citizens of Oldenburg," said Stahlmann in his speech.
The roof renovation, which began in 2017, proved to be much more complex than originally assumed due to the presence of building pollutants. The entire roof structure and the façade had to be rebuilt, and the electrics, ventilation and parts of the swimming pool technology were also replaced. The refurbished interior of the swimming pool now looks much friendlier, thanks in part to a new lighting concept. The roof construction and ventilation ducts have been painted in light colours, while the walls and ceilings have been given a new coat of paint. The dark wood panelling has been replaced by light-coloured acoustic panels.
