At a festive colloquium on 24 November 2025, Prof. Dr. Andreas Engel was awarded a senior professorship by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation. This honorary professorship is intended to give professors the opportunity to develop and try out innovative new concepts in university teaching after their official retirement. In this context, Professor Engel has rendered outstanding services to new approaches in mathematics education for physicists. Building on his textbook ‘Taylor Development, Jacobi Matrix, ∇, δ(x) and Co: Calculation Methods for Physics Students’, the second edition of which was published by Springer Verlag a few weeks ago, he will give the bachelor's lecture ‘Mathematics for Physicists’ at the IfP over the next three years as part of his senior professorship. After introductory remarks by the institute's director, Prof. Dr. Niklas Nilius (right in the photo), the managing director of the WE-Heraeus Foundation, Dr. Stefan Jorda (left), presented the certificate of appointment to Andreas Engel, before Prof. Massimiliano Esposito from the University of Luxembourg took the numerous guests on an exciting and challenging journey into non-equilibrium thermodynamics in his colloquium lecture. We wish Professor Engel every success in his senior professorship and would like to express our sincere thanks for his commitment to teaching.
