Pupils or teachers can "hire" physicists from the University of Oldenburg for a lecture at school. Professors and research assistants then report on their research areas and other physics topics in a way that is easy to understand. For example, they provide insights into the microcosm, the universe or energy and environmental physics.
"Rent-a-Prof" is the name of this special programme, which was launched by the Institute of Physics at the University of Oldenburg. "Rent-a-Prof is a special service offered by our Institute," explains Prof. Dr Michael Komorek, university lecturer in physics didactics and initiator of the programme. "In this way, current research topics in physics can be covered, most of which even fit in well with the core curriculum. Our aim is the direct exchange of information between teachers, pupils and physicists about the exciting world of physics. And also about study opportunities!" Pupils and teachers can choose from lectures such as "Hearing in humans from the perspective of physics", "The wondrous world of relativity - explaining paradoxical effects in an understandable way", "Spinning in colour" or "Good rays, bad rays - medical use of radiation physics". The physicists give their free lectures either during lessons or at evening events. The idea for "Rent-a-Prof" was born during Oldenburg's year as "City of Science 2009". Back then, Komorek initiated the "Physics In The City" lecture series, which provided information about current research fields in physics in a way that was easy to understand.
