Exploring the potential of subject-specific AI tools with teachers and students
In recent years, the development of in-house generative artificial intelligence (AI) has not only become increasingly important across universities, but is now also part of strategic agendas (Budde & Tobor, 2025). The potential of individual, subject-specific AI chatbots in studying and teaching can be seen in two ways: On the one hand, the developed systems open up a wide range of application scenarios, for example in the form of innovative learning formats, support for scientific working methods, individual learning support, exam preparation and student counselling. An overview of AI use cases in studies, teaching and support can be found here: AI use case catalogue. On the other hand, the development processes of subject-specific AI chatbots represent various learning opportunities for all those involved in development.
Building on the aforementioned potential, the first AI tutor systems for pedagogy at course level have been developed in recent months with the involvement of the USL staff unit. Co-creative processes with teaching staff and students have proved particularly successful. The first results will be presented in the coming year.
The USL staff unit would like to contribute to further developing the potential of artificial intelligence through such processes and is making its expertise in process design and AI development available for this purpose. If you are interested, teachers, even those without extensive AI knowledge, are welcome to get in touch.
