AI in teaching
AI in teaching
These pages provide information and basic knowledge on the topic of "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" in studying and teaching.
Guide to the use of Generative AI in studies and examinations.
This guide provides students with orientation on the responsible use of generative AI tools (GKI tools) in their studies. It explains what is meant by GKI tools, what rules apply to their use and how you can use these tools competently.
Extract from the guide:
The use of AI tools has become part of everyday and professional life within a very short space of time and the areas of application are expanding all the time. During your studies, you should develop skills for the appropriate use of generative AI (GKI) and for the selection of suitable GKI tools in order to be able to use GKI creatively and sensibly (Speck, 2023). It should be noted that AI must not hinder the individual acquisition of skills and that one's own performance must always remain recognisable. AI has its limits in the degree programme where it interferes with the acquisition of subject-specific and non-subject-specific skills or makes it impossible to demonstrate one's own performance.
Checklist for the authorised use of AI systems.
This checklist is intended as a self-check for students and other interested parties. It provides an overview of legal requirements. It does not constitute legal advice and is not a substitute for seeking legal advice in individual cases. All information has been carefully checked, but there is no guarantee that it is correct, complete or up to date.
Recommendations for dealing with GenAIs in studying and teaching
In 2023, the following recommendations were formulated for dealing with GenAIs in studying and teaching at the UOL.
Regulations on the principles for safeguarding good academic practice
The regulations on the principles for safeguarding good academic practice have been modified to take AI into account.
Instructions on GenAI: regulations, scope of application and initial training courses
On 15 January 2025, the Presidential Board sent an email with information on conditions and data protection when using the AcademicCloud and officially approved the use of Chat AI . The corresponding Instruction on the use of generative artificial intelligence and large language models in university administration (German only) came into force on 1 February 2025 and the first training courses were offered in January.
The directive applies to employees in the administration of the UOL and does not relate directly to teaching and studies, but is nevertheless of interest to everyone. This is because it generally permits the use of GenAI at the UOL (with restrictions), but largely restricts it to the Academic Cloud service with its AI offerings.
Declaration of independence for written theses
The use of GKI for final theses must be documented. In addition to the requirements of the lecturers, there are also adapted declarations of independence:
I n f o r m a t i o n S h e e t for the preparation of the thesis (text part)
Recommendations for the use of generative AI in the field of doctoral studies
For doctoral candidates there are
- Artificial intelligence in the BIS (library and information system)
- AI website for university didactics, including a collection of links on the topic (and recommendations):

- C3L statement: Our position on the use of AI in the C3L
- Artificial intelligence in health (AI4Health)
- Artificial intelligence in business informatics (data science)
- Artificial Intelligence: Study recommendation in the Computing Science master's degree programme
- Handout from the Institute of Protestant Theology and Religious Education:
Employees of the Institute for Protestant Theology and Religious Education at the UOL (2024). Handout for the preparation of scientific papers. From this, in particular Appendix II: Notes on the use of AItools such as ChatGPT
