INSTEP study preparation for international students

Would you like to study in Oldenburg but don’t yet have the required level of German? As well as helping you pass the German language examination for university entrance (DSH), the INSTEP study preparation programme provides other important building blocks for a successful start to your studies.  In addition, we’re happy to advise you personally on anything to do with starting your studies.

What services does the INSTEP study preparation programme provide?

Language courses

Studienvorbereitende Deutschkurse

Das Sprachenzentrum bietet intensive studienvorbereitende Sprachkurse, die innerhalb eines Jahres vom Niveau B1 zum Niveau C1 führen.

Subject-specific and interdisciplinary preparation

Die DSH-Prüfung wird zweimal im Jahr, im Juli und im Februar, angeboten. Nähere Informationen erhalten Sie auf den Seiten des Sprachenzentrums.

Advice and support

Das Sprachenzentrum bietet eine Reihe von Englischkursen an, die sich über den Kompetenzbereich von A2 bis C1 (CEF) erstrecken.

Who can take part?

Prospective international students who would like to study a degree programme taught in German at the University of Oldenburg can take part in the INSTEP study preparation programme. They will be enrolled as regular students for this purpose. Refugees are entitled to take part in the programme as guest students.

How can you apply?

You apply for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme via uni-assist. Refugees can also apply directly for the INSTEP study preparation programme via uni-assist.
Please apply no later than 15 January for the summer semester and 15 July for the winter semester.

Application for international students

Application for refugees

What are the requirements?

  1. You have at least A2/B1 level German.
  2. You have successfully applied via uni-assist.
  3. You have to pass the German language entrance examination.

Please note that there are limited places and we cannot guarantee you a place in the INSTEP study preparation programme.

How much does it cost to take part in the INSTEP study preparation programme?

You will pay the standard semester fee for enrolment. There are no other fees. We can register refugees as guest students and exempt them from all costs.

Can I also apply directly for the INSTEP study preparation programme?

You can only take part in the INSTEP study preparation programme if you have previously applied via uni-assist.

Can I still take part if I have no/insufficient knowledge of German?

The study preparation programme starts at B1 level. You must therefore have at least reached A2 level.

How long does the study preparation programme last?

If you start with B1 or B2, the study preparation programme lasts two semesters. If you start with C1, you only need one semester to complete the course. In exceptional cases, it is possible to resit the German course. This means attending the course for an extra semester.

I would like to study a degree programme taught in English. Can I still benefit from study preparation services?

For students studying degree programmes taught in English, we offer the INSTEP study support service.
