Born in 1945, after artistic studies at the Musikhochschule Freiburg i. Br. studied teaching at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, 1973 doctorate in musicology (Prof. Dr H. H. Eggebrecht; Musiklehrbücher in den Schulen der BRD, Luchterhand Neuwied 1974). Worked as a radio journalist and publicist, teaching. Teaching at the Bremen Conservatory.

Since 1980 active in music teacher training, initially as a research assistant and university assistant at the University of Oldenburg, 1988 to 1992 as a research assistant at the University of Hildesheim. 1988 Habilitation at the University of Oldenburg (Instrument and Body. Die musizierende Frau in der bürgerlichen Kultur, Insel Frankfurt/M. and Leipzig 1991).

1992 Appointment to the University of Oldenburg. 1990 -1997 co-editor of "Musik und Unterricht", 1993/94 member of the Lower Saxony Women's Research Commission. 1996 - 2005 Head of a DFG project on the edition of orchestral and chamber music by the French composer Louise Farrenc (1804 - 1875). Since 2001 Director of the Sophie Drinker Institute for Musicological Women's and Gender Studies in Bremen.

2008 honoured with the Pauline Alderman Award for the bibliography "Musik - Frauen - Gender. Bücherverzeichnis 1780 - 2004", (Oldenburg 2006).
