Desired examiner procedure winter semester 2026/27

Procedure for requesting examiners for the 2026/27 winter semester
The procedure described below, ‘WiSe26/27’, is intended for all students who wish to register their Bachelor’s thesis in German Studies with the Examinations Office between 1 October 2026 and 31 March 2027 with the Examinations Office.

We are delighted that you have decided to write your Bachelor’s thesis in German Studies. To select your examiners, please take part in the preferred examiner selection procedure. Please read all the information under the headings below. If you have any questions after reading this, please feel free to contact us by email . Please include a telephone number where you can be reached, as some questions are easier to clarify over the phone.

  • Registration for the preferred examiner selection procedure (WPV-BA courses) in Stud.IP for the winter semester 2026/27: 1 July to 16 August 2026

Who is authorised to write first and second assessments for the Bachelor's thesis?

  • You can find an overview of the academic staff authorised to act as first or second examiners for your Bachelor’s thesis here.
  • When selecting your preferred examiners, the first step is simply to choose your first examiner. You may therefore select any person from the table who is authorised to act as a first examiner for Bachelor’s theses.

    Please note:
The validity period for each semester can be seen from the table:
→ 01.04.: valid for the respective summer semester
→ 01.10.: valid for the respective winter semester

Who decides who will be my second assessor?

  • The second assessor is determined by the first assessor in accordance with the Institute Council resolution of 14 February 2011 and in consultation with the Examinations Office according to content criteria and taking into account the requirement that one of the two assessors must belong to the group of university lecturers or be a private lecturer. (In individual cases, the responsible Bachelor's examination board may allow the BA thesis to be assessed by two full-time lecturers who are not members of the professors' group or private lecturers, BPO, General Part, § 22 (2)).
  • At the latest when you have the registration form, which you must submit to the Examinations Office*, signed by your first assessor, the first assessor must inform you who the second assessor is. You then visit the second assessor during office hours and have the registration form signed by him/her if the current form requires this.

*Note: If you have any questions regarding the admission of your Bachelor's thesis to the Examinations Office, please contact the Examinations Office!

How does the preferred examiner process work?

  • The allocation of preferred examiners is carried out via Stud.IP – in the same way as the course registration process.
  • There is a separate group in Stud.IP for each lecturer authorised to act as a first examiner for Bachelor’s theses. Each group has as many places as there are Bachelor’s theses being supervised by lecturers authorised to act as first examiners.
  • All groups are identified by the code ‘WPV-BA’ (standing for ‘Preferred Examiner Procedure for Bachelor’s Theses’).
  • To find the courses, switch to the relevant semester and simply enter ‘WPV-BA’ in the Stud.IP search bar. You will then be shown all the courses from which you can select your preferred examiners.
  • Once the system has been activated (check the homepage and messages via the list server), you can create your priority list of preferred examiners in Stud.IP by selecting the WPV-BA groups.

Very important: As with the previous paper-based procedure, please include at least 9 different examiners – and preferably more – from different modules in your priority list. The more preferred examiners you include on your priority list, the higher your chance of securing a place with one of your preferred examiners.
  • The date of the ballot via StudIP will be announced on the homepage and via the list server.
  • If you have not been allocated a place with one of your preferred examiners, please contact the administration office at .
  • Only after the draw – that is, once your primary supervisor has been confirmed – should you contact them to discuss the specific topic of your thesis.

Please note: The WPV-BA groups are not the accompanying courses for the BA thesis, but simply groups on Stud.IP used to manage the preferred supervisor selection process and thus the allocation of supervisors. For information on the accompanying course, see ‘When do I enrol in the accompanying course for the Bachelor’s thesis? Which accompanying course do I need to enrol in?’ on this page.

If you have any questions after reading this page in full please contact by email Please feel free to provide a telephone number where you can be reached. Sometimes it is easier to clarify a matter over the phone.

I still have to register at the Examinations Office.
What has to be done and when?
What requirements do I have to fulfil?

  • The preferred supervisor selection process, which runs via Stud.IP, must be completed before you register your Bachelor’s thesis with the Examinations Office. This means that you should only register your Bachelor’s thesis with the Examinations Office once your Institute has assigned you your first supervisor via the priority allocation process. It is there that you will be granted admission to undertake your Bachelor’s thesis.
  • You may withdraw from the preferred supervisor selection process in German Studies at any time without giving a reason. Simply remove yourself from the relevant WPV-BA group and inform the administration office at of your withdrawal.
  • Once the priority allocation process has taken place, it is only possible to change your supervisor during the current semester if there are still places available in the WPV-BA group for your newly selected preferred supervisor in Stud.IP! Please contact the administration office directly regarding any change.
  • Withdrawal from registration with the Examinations Office is subject to the provisions of the Bachelor’s examination regulations.
  • Furthermore, you do not yet need to meet the requirements for writing your Bachelor’s thesis as set out in the examination regulations in order to take part in the preferred examiner selection process in Stud.IP. Proof of these requirements must only be provided when you register with the Examinations Office!
  • If you have taken part in the ‘preferred supervisor’ procedure for a summer semester, you must register your Bachelor’s thesis with the Examinations Office by 30 September at the latest (the relevant registration period is from 1 April to 30 September).
If you have taken part in the ‘preferred examiner’ procedure for a winter semester, you must register your Bachelor’s thesis with the Examinations Office by 31 March at the latest (the relevant registration period is from 1 October to 31 March).
  • In summary: To register your Master’s thesis, all documents must be fully completed and signed (including by your primary supervisor) by the registration deadline, i.e. by 31 March (winter semester) or 30 September (summer semester) at the latest. Please therefore ensure that you complete the forms and obtain the necessary signatures in good time (!), i.e. no later than one month before the deadline.

If it becomes apparent that you will not be able to do this, you will have to take part in the preferred supervisor selection process again for the following semester. By the time of the draw as part of the priority allocation process (please note the deadlines), you must therefore be certain whether or not you will register your Master’s thesis with the Examinations Office by 31 March (winter semester) or 30 September (summer semester) in order to take part in the preferred supervisor selection process for the following semester if necessary!

--> The Examinations Office would like to point out that a copy of your A-level certificate must be enclosed with your registration!

When do I take the accompanying course for my Bachelor's thesis? Which accompanying course do I have to take?

  • You take the accompanying course to your Bachelor's thesis in the semester in which you write your Bachelor's thesis. Exceptions only apply to components that do not offer the colloquium in every semester (this may be the case for Medieval Studies).
  • Students who would like to write their Bachelor's thesis in summer semester 26 in a German Studies component for which no accompanying course is offered in summer semester 26 should attend the accompanying course closest to their subject. Registration for the accompanying course for the Bachelor's thesis (this has a 'normal' course number, i.e. 3.01.xxx) will take place after the draw on 15.08.2025 via the office, which you will receive after 15.08.2025 will write to all students registered in a WPV-BA group to request the necessary details.

Note: The WPV-BA groups are not the accompanying courses to the BA thesis, but merely groups in Stud.IP, with the help of which the preferred examiner procedure and thus the assignment of examiners is carried out.

Please only take part in the prioritised examiner lottery procedure for summer semester 26 if you are writing your Bachelor's thesis in summer semester 26!

Can I write my Bachelor's thesis in each component?

  • Yes, you may write your Bachelor's thesis in WiSe 25/26 in any component, including language didactics or literature didactics.
  • At this point, we would like to point out the following regulation of the subject-specific annexes for German Studies for the M.Ed. Gym, G, HR, whereby the M.Ed. examination regulations, which are the most recent at the time of your enrolment in the Master's degree programme, are always decisive.
"Students should choose a subject area for their Master's thesis that they have not already worked on in their German Studies Bachelor's thesis. Subject areas include literary studies, linguistics, medieval studies, German as a foreign language, specialised didactics and Low German."
    • Please note: KJL is not a separate component. KJL belongs to literary studies. So if you are writing your Bachelor's thesis on the subject of Young Adult Literature, you are writing in the Literary Studies component!
    • Please note: Media Studies is not a separate component. Media studies is part of literary studies. So if you are writing your Bachelor's thesis in the field of media studies, you are writing in the literary studies component!

If you have any questions, please contact the office by email.

What is the scope of the Bachelor's thesis?

The BA thesis should comprise 75,000 characters (including spaces) +/-10%. The 75,000 characters refer only to the text including the footnotes. The cover sheet, table of contents, bibliography and appendices are not included. (Resolution of the institute council of 24 June 2020).

How long is the processing time for the Bachelor's thesis?

The period from the allocation of the topic for the Bachelor’s thesis to the submission of the thesis is four months (see § 22(5) of the General Part of the Bachelor’s Examination Regulations, available here:
https://uol.de/studiengang/pruefungen/germanistik-2f-bachelor-9.)

(Note/Explanation: According to the General Part of the Bachelor’s Examination Regulations, Section 22(5), the following applies: “The period from the allocation of the topic to the submission of the Bachelor’s thesis shall not exceed four months. Further details may be regulated in the subject-specific appendices”. Up to and including the 2023 summer semester, point 9 of the subject-specific appendix for German Studies contained the sentence “The processing time [for the Bachelor’s thesis] is 9 weeks”. For the winter semester 23/24, an amendment to the subject-specific annex for German Studies of the BPO was adopted, in which this sentence was deleted. In accordance with the transitional provisions for the 18th amendment to the BPO, Section II, point 1, the changes come into force for all students from the winter semester 23/24, regardless of when they commenced their studies. Consequently, as of the winter semester 23/24, the provisions set out in Section 22(5) of the general part of the BPO apply to the Bachelor’s thesis in German Studies for all students, regardless of when they commenced their studies: the processing time is 4 months. Should you have any queries regarding this, please contact the administration office by email. Please feel free to provide a telephone number where you can be reached, as some matters are easier to clarify in a conversation.

I missed the draw date - what now?

You can still register for the winter semester 25/26, even after the allocation draw, with the first-choice tutors whose WPV-BA groups still have places available, until 29 August 2025 (please note the following information regarding the accompanying course, second indent, if you have not yet enrolled on it).

Please then register immediately at with the following information, as the Stud.IP office is not automatically notified when someone registers late:

  • Which WPV-BA group have you registered for?
  • Have you already attended the accompanying course for the Bachelor’s thesis, or do you need to attend it in the winter semester 25/26? Ms Brören will then register you.
  • In which component are you writing your Bachelor’s thesis? (This is not necessarily clear automatically, as some first assessors are authorised to provide initial assessments across multiple components. This information is important for the office to enrol you in the relevant accompanying course).

(You also have the option of joining a first supervisor’s waiting list, provided there are still places available on the list. However, this carries the risk that you may not be able to move up the list in time if no one withdraws from the WPV-BA group. Only a single registration is permitted in total: either where there are still free places or where there are still free places on the waiting list! All waiting lists will be deleted after 29 August 2025!).

First-time supervisors whose WPV-BA group no longer has any available places will not be able to supervise your Bachelor’s thesis during the current semester.

If, after 29 August 2025, you realise that you have missed the draw deadline, please contact the administration office directly by email. It must first be clarified whether you can still be admitted and, depending on the timing of your enquiry, whether it is still possible to join the accompanying course at the time of your registration.

If you have any questions, please contact the administration office by email. Please include a telephone number in your email where you can be reached. Some matters are easier to clarify in a conversation.
