Enrolment information for ger231

Dear students,

The medieval studies advanced module ger231 (‘Early German Literature and Language’) always runs for a full academic year and consists of a foundational seminar, ‘Fundamentals of Translating from Middle High German’ (or ‘Fundamentals of Translation from Middle Low German’) in the winter semester and an advanced seminar on a topic from the field of early German literature in the following summer semester.

Introductory seminars are only offered in the winter semester and must be completed before the respective advanced seminar, which is only offered in the summer semester. Three to four introductory seminars are held each winter semester, the content of which is largely identical.

Upon completion of the introductory seminar, you may make a selection in the following summer semester regarding which of the three to four advanced seminars you wish to attend (exception: if the introductory seminar focused on Low German, the advanced seminar must also focus on Low German).

Please bear this in mind when planning your studies, particularly if you are planning to spend a semester abroad.

This module is compulsory for students aiming to become secondary school teachers.

Kind regards

Albrecht Hausmann

(Further information on ger231 is available at
https://uol.de/germanistik/mediaevistik/studium/bachelor/aufbaumodul-ger231).

If you did not complete any modules in medieval studies during your Bachelor’s degree, you must make up for this during your Master’s degree, even if this is not specified as a requirement in your letter of acceptance. The examination regulations for the M.Ed. German programme require every student to demonstrate a basic knowledge of medieval literature before registering for their Master’s thesis. The easiest way to do this is by successfully completing module ger231. Please note that it is best to start the module in the first semester of your Master’s programme so that you can complete it in time to register for your Master’s thesis. Please contact Prof. Dr Albrecht Hausmann in good time to clarify how this proof can be provided. A form for providing this evidence can be found here. This information applies in particular to students who completed their Bachelor’s degree at another university where medieval studies programmes may not have been available at all (e.g. Vechta, Lüneburg, Hanover, Hildesheim).
