Bringing forward Master's modules in the subject of German Studies

The following information only applies to bringing forward Master's modules in the subject of German Studies/German!

If you would like to bring forward modules in another subject, please get in touch with the contact person responsible for that subject!(Link to the educational sciences)

Are you still on your Bachelor’s programme and would like to take Master’s modules in German Studies/German at an earlier stage? If so, please follow the steps below and note the following:

  1. According to the examination regulations for the M.Ed degree programmes, Master’s modules may only be taken early once at least 120 credit points have been earned in the Bachelor’s degree and all core modules have been successfully completed.
For the master's degree programme in German Studies and the master's degree programme in German as a Foreign Language/German as a Second Language (DaF/DaZ), the following applies: at least 120 credit points must have been earned in the Bachelor’s degree, and the Bachelor’s thesis must have been completed in the subject in which the Master’s modules are to be taken early, see Section 9 of the General Part of the Master’s Examination Regulations for master's degree programmes in Faculty Group III. (As a general rule, the requirements set out in the examination regulations applicable to you apply!).
Note for students who wish to bring forward the subject placement or the research and development placement in the M.Ed. Gym programme: Please note that, in addition, you must obtain the consent of the module coordinators by email before submitting your application to the Examinations Office. For German Studies, this is Prof. Dr Katrin Kleinschmidt-Schinke.
  2. The examination regulations also stipulate that no more than 30 credit points’ worth of Master’s modules may be taken in advance during the Bachelor’s programme. (An overview of the examination regulations can be found here).
  3. Students already enrolled on Master’s programmes have priority when registering for courses. For this reason, you cannot enrol in Master’s modules yourself.
  4. In Step 1, you must submit your proposal to take modules in advance to the Examinations Office. (The proposal does not need to be signed by the module coordinator). Please note: Anyone wishing to take the specialist placement and/or the FeP in advance must first obtain additional approval from the module coordinators!
Please use only the current form for your application, which you can find via the following link and here under ‘forms and templates’: https://uol.de/studiengang/pruefungen/germanistik-2f-bachelor-9
  5. As soon as you have received notification from the Examinations Office that the chair of the examination board has approved your proposal, please send this notification together with your proposal (!) to the . Important: The proposal must be submitted in good time so that you receive the notification by the second week of the course at the latest and can submit it, together with the proposal, to the administrative office! Ideally, the notification should be available before the course begins.
  6. In your email to the administrative office, please list the courses you wish to attend in order of priority, stating the course number, title and lecturer. Without this information, you cannot be enrolled even if places are available. Please also state your Stud.IP username.
  7. Provided that, after all students duly enrolled on the Master’s programme have been accommodated (see point 8), there are still places available in the Master’s module seminars you have requested, you will be added to the register upon submission of all the details specified in point 6.
  8. As students regularly enrolled on the Master’s programme have priority when it comes to booking courses, it will not become clear until mid-March at the earliest – though more likely from the start of April or possibly not until the first or second week of the term – whether a place is available for you. Additional enrolments can only take place then. Please be patient in the meantime.

You may only attend the course you wish to prioritise if you have been registered in Stud.IP! You will only be registered once you have received confirmation from the Examinations Office. It is generally no longer possible to join courses after the second week of the term. Please therefore ensure you submit your application in good time!

And here is another point to bear in mind if you have been allocated a place on a course to take modules early and wish to register for an examination at a later date: if you are taking a module early, you cannot register for the examination online. Please contact your designated administrator at the Examinations Office directly to register for the examination. For students whose first subject is in FK III or FK IV, the email address is: p-amt.fk3.fk4.dez3@uol.de.
