Former Minister visits ZfMarS

On 20 October, Björn Thümler, Member of the State Parliament, visited the Centre for Marine Sensors (ZfMarS), which is part of the ICBM, at the invitation of the current acting director, Dr Thomas Badewien. Thümler, former Minister of Science of Lower Saxony, during whose term of office the establishment of the ZfMarS at the Wilhelmshaven site also took place, informed himself about the current developments at the centre.

The head of the ICBM research group Processes and Sensing of Marine Interfaces at the ICBM, Prof. Dr Oliver Wurl, explained, among other things, the remote-controlled research catamaran GLAUCUS ATLANTICUS, developed at the ZfMarS, which - like its autonomously operating sister model HALOBATES - takes on prominent tasks in the investigation of the sea surface and especially the wafer-thin surface layer.

The research catamarans also play an important role in projects such as BASS (Biogeochemical processes and Air-sea exchange in the Sea-Surface microlayer). Another current project Thümler learned about is MATE (Maritime Traffic Emissions: A Monitoring Network), in which, among other things, tows and buoys play a role, for example, in detecting soot and oil contamination on the ocean surface and in the near-surface ocean area.

Dr Badewien, who is currently also the acting head of the ICBM working group Marine Sensor Systems, also presented the current development status of the YDE-Fix towed body designed for MATE to the guest from Hanover. Badewien and working group member Dr Helge-Ansgar Giebel also provided information about the Gute Küste Niedersachsen („Good Coast Lower Saxony” project). The project deals with ecosystem strengthening coastal protection on the Lower Saxony coast within three real laboratories near Nessmersiel, at Langwarder Groden and on and around Spiekeroog.

An interactive model of the project, largely realised with LEGO bricks, was obviously very well received by Thümler, so that he commented on this project contribution to knowledge transfer with the words "Put it on display in the state parliament".
