In School III – Linguistics and Cultural Studies, research and teaching focus on analysing and interpreting language, literature, art, music, and everyday culture. The school benefits from a remarkable combination of philologies with cultural studies and arts-related disciplines and a diverse range of interdisciplinary options.
The Institute of English and American Studies, located within this school, focuses on the local specifics of Anglophone linguistic and cultural spheres and their historic and contemporary global interrelationships. The variety of research perspectives in literary, cultural and linguistic studies as well as in the specialised teaching methodology are expressed in a diverse range of courses – both at the level of the polyvalent Bachelor's as well as on Master of Education degree programmes for all types of school in Lower Saxony. The MA in English Studies, the interdisciplinary MA in Language Dynamics, in which the Institute is involved, and the European Master of Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR), which is coordinated at the Institute are all firmly research-oriented degree programmes.
Your tasks
- While undertaking specialist research, you are able to convey language and intercultural skills in English under conditions of increasing linguistic and cultural heterogeneity in teaching settings, ideally using digital methods.
- The chief tasks of your new position will be research with potential for interdisciplinary development in the field of English teaching for teachers, preferably with a language teaching focus ideally making use of digital methods; teaching on the polyvalent Bachelor's and on Master of Education degree programmes for all types of school as well as conceptual and organizational responsibility for the teacher training across school types in the teaching subject English. In this way, you will strengthen the Institute and the School in research and teaching with a team-oriented approach.
- You will also be actively involved in the interdisciplinary structures of teacher training and maintain contact with schools to ensure a practical and reflexive teaching methodology in English. This includes playing an active role in the Centre for Teacher Training (Didaktisches Zentrum, DiZ) including its special structures for professional development and research support.
- Moreover, you will support and foster the academic career development of both students and employees.
- In teaching, you will present the full range of Teaching English as a Foreign Language relating to all types of school, and teach courses in all of the Institute's BA and MEd degree programmes.
- You will offer English-language teaching formats.
- As the University of Oldenburg and the University of Bremen are connected by a cooperation agreement, active participation in the cooperation is expected.
- You will also participate in academic self-governance.
- You promote a university culture that is diverse and equitable. You are willing to cooperate in the school's research initiative "Fortgeschrittener Spracherwerb" (Advanced Language Teaching and Learning) and in the university's research focus "Diversity and Participation".
Your profile
Required characteristics:
- You meet the appointment requirements specified in section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG).
- You provide evidence of a minimum of three years’ teaching experience at a school or equivalent pedagogical experience or relevant empirical research experience corresponding to these duties.
- You have a doctorate in the subject of Teaching English as a Foreign Language, research into the teaching and learning of foreign languages, research into learning and researching languages, or another field of English or American studies.
- You have qualifications in the full range of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in didactics.
- You have successfully acquired third-party-funded projects.
- You have experience in academic self-governance.
- You have a cooperative working style that promotes a diverse and equitable working environment.
- You have experience in mentoring and promoting academic career development.
- You provide a clear presentation of how you interconnect your specializations in research and teaching to the institute and the school in a research concept and a teaching concept (max. three pages each).
You have C2-level English language skills and B2-level German language skills. If you do not have German language skills, you are willing to acquire them within two years of appointment.
