¹1.5 hours of teaching constitute one teaching unit (1 UE) in the University of Oldenburg’s system, as stated, for example, in the module descriptions.
² The course takes place in the 1st and 3rd Master’s semesters. The 2nd semester is set aside for the placement phase – without one-to-one tuition.

Variations on the standard allocation (‘extensions’ of the entitlement)

BA with a specialisation in Special Educational Needs:
No advanced modules are studied on this programme; to avoid interruptions, it is possible to spread the course over a longer period. e.g.:
3 semesters x 1.5 hours → 4 x 1 hour + 1 x 0.5 hours or similar.

mus710 (M.Ed. Gym):
Here, it is possible to extend the course duration from two to three semesters:
2 semesters x 1.5 hours → 3 semesters x 1.0 hours

Key questions (and answers) regarding the right to education

Can I spread my allocation of lessons across several semesters as I wish?

No. Lessons must be taken in the semester for which the entitlement applies. They cannot be postponed or transferred to other semesters. (Exceptions are semesters abroad without instrumental lessons; see below.) Unused lessons are forfeited.

How can I divide up my weekly 1.5 hours of one-to-one lessons
?

  1. 1 hour on the main instrument, 0.5 hours on a secondary instrument (standard option)
  2. 3 x 0.5 hours, three different instruments (e.g. harmony instrument + another instrument + singing)
  3. 1.5 hours on just one instrument (possible, but rarely recommended)

Is attendance compulsory, or can I take fewer lessons than specified
?

The entitlement to lessons also constitutes an obligation to attend to the same extent, as credit points (KP) are awarded in the respective modules, amongst other things, for attendance.

How is my attendance at lessons documented?

Active participation in lessons is certified by the teacher on the relevant cumulative course result sheet. The completed cumulative course result sheet must be submitted to the relevant module coordinator by the end of the module. (This is the only way module marks and results can be communicated to the Examinations Office.)

For reasons beyond my control (e.g. due to a teacher’s prolonged illness
), my cumulative course result sheet is incomplete. Can I still complete the module
?

Under certain circumstances, it is possible to complete a training module with a successful module examination even if you have attended fewer classes; however, this is always decided on a case-by-case basis and must be discussed with the module coordinator in advance.

Can I fill a gap in my course enrolments / on my cumulative course result sheet
, even if I am no longer entitled to teaching hours?

In this case, it is advisable to submit a proposal for an unallocated remaining lesson. During the first two weeks of a semester, the lessons still available from individual lecturers are allocated in this way. To do so, you must submit a written proposal, stating your reasons (form available under FAQ / Frequently Asked Questions), by email to Gereon Voß ().
!! There is no entitlement to a remaining lesson !!

Can I, or do I have to, take classes during a sabbatical semester?

No. You are only entitled to lessons during semesters in which you are actively studying at the Institute of Music – i.e. not during semesters of leave.

What happens to my entitlement to lessons during a semester abroad?

In the case of a semester abroad without instrumental tuition, the entitlement to lessons may be carried over to other semesters. To do so, you must submit a timely proposal (before your stay abroad) to the Institute of Music’s administrative office () or to Gereon Voß (), along with the relevant documents and certificates.

Deadline for proposals: by 1 July for the winter semester and by 1 February for the summer semester.

Will my entitlement to tuition per semester be reduced whilst undertaking part-time study?

Not initially. Whilst studying part-time, one-to-one tuition takes place to the same extent and for the same duration as for a standard-duration programme (1.5 hours per week). However, if you wish to reduce the number of lessons per term in line with your part-time status (and thus spread them over more terms than usual), you must apply in advance to the Office of the Institute of Music () or to Gereon Voß ().

Deadline for proposals: by 1 July for the winter semester and by 1 February for the summer semester.

How do I manage my entitlement to tuition if my Bachelor’s degree takes longer than 6 semesters? Can I bring forward tuition from the Master’s programme?

If the Bachelor’s programme lasts longer than six semesters, individual tuition from the Master’s programme may be brought forward. Interrupting the course of tuition at this stage may not be advisable. The entitlement to tuition would then be taken continuously, without further interruption (and without the need to apply), so that by the end of the 8th semester of the BA programme, all entitlements would have been used up. However, if you were to subsequently enrol on an MEd programme, no new entitlement would arise.

The teaching I’m receiving isn’t enough for me to pass a module examination. Can I receive more teaching than is actually provided for?

Strictly speaking, no. The only way to receive additional tuition is to submit a proposal for an unallocated remaining lesson slot. During the first two weeks of a semester, any teaching hours still available from individual lecturers are allocated in this way. To do this, you must submit a written proposal, stating your reasons (form available under FAQ / Frequently Asked Questions), by email to Gereon Voß ().
!! There is no entitlement to a spare lesson !!
