Large crowds at the "Day of Physics" and "Day of Mathematics"
On 9 November, more than 700 pupils and teachers from across the North-West region took advantage of the opportunity offered by the University of Oldenburg to find out about degree programmes in the subjects of mathematics and physics during the ‘Physics Day’ and ‘Mathematics Day’.
Visitors were able to experience the diversity of these subjects for themselves through specialist talks and laboratory tours, workshops, an information café and an exhibition. The physics lectures focused on ‘Physics in Space – Gravitational Waves, Black Holes & Co’ and experimental physics, using wind energy as an example. The keynote lecture in mathematics was delivered by Prof. Dr Alfred K. Louis (Saarbrücken) on the topic: “From the oven to the X-ray tube – it’s all maths”. The Institutes of Physics and Mathematics also used experience reports, experiments and a poster exhibition to highlight that both subjects are enjoyable and offer excellent career prospects. As in previous years, pupils were awarded book prizes as part of a research project competition.
