Physics Day 2011
Physics Day 2011
Laser swords and X-ray tubes: Physics and maths day
The “Physics Day” and “Mathematics Day”, which will take place simultaneously on Wednesday 9 November from 9.15 am on the Wechloy campus of the University of Oldenburg, focus on study and career opportunities for physicists and mathematicians. Both events are aimed at school pupils, teachers, first-year undergraduates and the interested public.
On Physics Day, guided tours of the research laboratories will be offered. From 9.15 am, ForWind – the Wind Energy Research Centre at the Universities of Oldenburg, Hanover and Bremen – will, amongst other things, present its wind tunnel. At 10.15 am, Prof. Dr Martin Holthaus, Dean of School V – School of Mathematics and Science, will welcome visitors to ‘Physics Day’. Prof. Dr Michael Komorek, an expert in physics education, will present the ‘Special Project Prize’ to pupils for outstanding special projects. Following this, Prof. Dr Martin Kühn, Endowed Professor of Wind Energy Systems, will provide an insight into experimental physics in his lecture ‘Darth Vader and Wind Energy – How to Understand Wind with Lightsabres’. Prof. Dr Claus Lämmerzahl will introduce the field of theoretical physics in his lecture ‘Physics in Space – Gravitational Waves, Black Holes & Co’. In the section ‘Degree… and then?’, graduates will answer questions about starting a career. In addition, on the Ringebene, the physics research groups and early-career researchers will provide information about their research projects. A presentation of the degree programmes rounds off ‘Physics Day’.
More information
The “Mathematics Day” is themed “From the oven to the X-ray tube – it’s all maths”. It begins at 9.45 am with the official welcome. The keynote lecture, ‘From the oven to the X-ray tube – it’s all maths’, will be delivered by Prof. Dr Alfred K. Louis, a lecturer in mathematics at Saarland University, at 12.00 pm in the Main Lecture Theatre (Building W3, Room 1-161). In workshops and at the Info Café, run by students, those interested can find out everything about studying mathematics at the university.
