Solar World Congress 2021 - Master's Course in Solar Energy

Surangi Lakmini Wanninayaka from Sri Lanka (PPRE 2020-22) co-presented at the Closing Ceremony of Solar World Congress (SWC) 2021 and attended the Masters Course in Solar Energy conducted by University of Kassel and SWC which was held online in October 2021.

The Masters Course in Solar Energy is a prestigious opportunity given to ISES student members to explore latest and creative developments in solar energy as well as to connect with experts in the field apart from attending the Solar World Congress. This program is organized by ISES President Prof. Dr. Klaus Vajen from University of Kassel, Germany. It was initially started in 2000 and continued to be held in several years in parallel to Solar World Congress.

Students having a bachelor’s degree with a good knowledge in the field of solar energy were selected to attend this program. This is a 3 CP course (90 hours workload) and students were given research topics addressed in the SWC such as Solar Heating & Cooling Technologies, Photovoltaics, Solar Buildings, Solar Thermal Electricity, Thermal storage, Solar Resource Assessment and Grid Integration. Based on the papers presented at the conference, students were assigned to do a detailed study on these topics and present the findings at the final exam. Apart from attending the Masters course, students were given the opportunity to attend the Solar World Congress Conference through a virtual platform which allowed them to attend all technical sessions and also special sessions like Solar Speed Dating for establishing connections with authors, presenters and ISES community around the world.

8 students from 8 countries (Nigeria, Iran, Afghanistan, Germany, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Sri Lanka and Pakistan) with different backgrounds were selected to attend the Masters Course 2021. Surangi Lakmini Wanninayaka from University of Oldenburg attended the Masters course addressing the research topic of Solar Thermal Electricity and received a Graded Certificate of Achievement. She also had the opportunity to co-present on the “SWC 2021 Masters Course in Solar Energy” during the Closing Ceremony of Solar World Congress on 29th October 2021.

The Masters Course in Solar Energy of Solar World Congress 2021 was a great platform to learn about new horizons and latest developments while connecting with researchers all around the world with the target of achieving 100% sustainable future. Finally, the efforts and supports given by all the representers from University of Kassel, International Solar Energy Society (ISES) and Solar World Congress are acknowledged with appreciation.
