Political System of Germany and the EU
The professorship examines political processes and structures in Germany and the European Union from a comparative and European multilevel perspective. Its research focuses on the political actors, institutions, and processes that shape interactions between different levels of government.
A particular emphasis is placed on political parties and representation. The research examines how political parties compete with one another, which issues and positions they advocate, and how political representation is structured in democratic societies. It also explores how societal changes and divergent interests are reflected in political systems.
Another area of focus is local politics. Cities and municipalities are central arenas of political decision-making and participation. The research addresses, among other things, local party competition, political actors, and how political conflicts and societal developments affect politics at the local level.
In addition, the professorship examines political processes within the European multilevel system. This includes the interplay between local, regional, national, and European politics, as well as how political decisions and conflicts are mediated across these levels.
Another area of research focuses on the relationship between sports and politics. The emphasis is on how political actors use sports for political purposes, the growing importance of sports in political communication and decision-making, and how citizens perceive political issues related to sports.
Methodologically, the professorship combines theory-driven research with quantitative and computer-assisted methods in political science. These include, in particular, the analysis of political texts, the study of party positions, and the comparative analysis of data on political attitudes, elections, and political actors.
In its teaching, the professorship provides students with foundational and in-depth knowledge of Germany’s political system, the European Union, and comparative political science. Students have the opportunity to engage with current political developments and conduct their own empirical analyses.
