Preparation for studies
How can I prepare for my degree programme?
Studying at university often represents a completely new stage in your life. You may be wondering what you will have to face during your studies and what competences and skills are expected of you. You may not have attended sixth form and/or you may have left school a long time ago, so you are unsure whether your knowledge is sufficient for starting university.
In any case, it is worth preparing for your studies at an early stage. Below you will find tips and further information on preparing for university.
Study preparation before enrolment
Many university lecturers require knowledge from the upper secondary school, for example in mathematics, English or in subjects related to your chosen degree programme. This also includes reading, working through, summarising, writing scientific texts and justifying your own position.
Find out early on what knowledge is required. One way to brush up on the required basic knowledge is to use books and work materials to prepare for the Abitur. You can also find out from adult education providers how you can prepare for your studies in subjects such as English and maths.
Study preparation after enrolment
Starting a degree programme can come with a few challenges - after all, university is new territory for most students. However, this also means that you are not alone!
Check the pages of the student body of your degree programme to find out what is available for you as a first-year student. The student bodies offer various orientation materials, such as first semester booklets, subject presentations, introductory videos, podcasts or interviews with students with tips on starting your degree programme. The student bodies are also on hand to answer any questions you may have about starting your degree programme.
On the pages of the InfoPortal Studies you will find the most important information for first-year students (e.g. dates, video impressions, information on living in Oldenburg).
