Cascade Use awarded with the German Raw Material Efficiency Award 2018

January 31st, 2019

In its final year of funding Cascade Use was awarded the Raw Material Efficiency Award 2018 by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy BMWi. On January 31st 2019 Oliver Wittke, Parlamentarischer Staatssekretär of the BMWi handed over the "Deutsche Rohstoffeffizienz-Preis 2018" to three companies and Cascade Use as only Research Institution of the Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg. Cascade Use cooperated with ID Impuls and Callparts recycling to develop the decision tool RAUPE. RAUPE supports the sustainable usage of used car parts.

CCU Members Björn Koch and Master student Sebastian Tiemann win international research grant

November 6th, 2018

The International Round Table on Critical Materials (IRTC) has awarded two research grants for papers on criticality, with focus on topics such as the definition of criticality, its application and broader implications for the economy and global development, as well as technical aspects of criticality measurement.

Congratulations to Joana Kotnis (TU Delft/University of Leiden) for winning with a research project on the Recycling opportunities of Cobalt in De Hague, and Björn Koch and Sebastian Tiemann (University of Oldenburg) with a proposal on Raw Materials Indices! Björn Koch had the possibilty to present the research proposal live in Tokyo at the IRTC just prior to the Ecobalance Conference.

Head of CCU Alexandra Pehlken honored by FONA as "Head of the Future"

The BMBF program FONA "Research for Sustainable Development" honors some researchers as "Head of the Future" and Head of Cascade Alexandra Pehlken is part of it. We are very happy to have our work recognized.

Rikka Wittstock receives VDI grant for her Master Thesis

We congratulate our former colleague Rikka Wittstock to her VDI Award. Rikka wrote her  Master thesis on the topic: "Resource Constraints for the Diffusion of Fuel Cell Vehicles: Assessing the Role of Recycling in Meeting Future Platinum Demand" within the CCU group. The VDI Association awarded 2 best Master Thesis projects related to the topics energy and environment. A report in german about the VDI and the Award is available on this link:

Fernando Peñaherrera and his group won first prize

During the week of the 6th to 10th of February, the Cascade Use group attended the 1st ReCreew Global Spring School on Electrical and Electronic Waste as part of the ReCreew EU Cost Action.  Alexandra Pehlken and Clayton Burger presented the opening workshop focussing on databases related to critical materials in WEEE.

The interactive workshop was well received by participants – doctoral and post-doctoral students from various countries in Europe.  Fernando Peñaherrera from Cascade Use attended as a student participant and his project group was awarded first prize in the presentation sessions.  Each member of Fernando’s group was awarded a full presentation and trip to Rhodes, Greece, at the next ReCreew project meeting.

 

Heinz Neumüller Stiftung awards scholarship to Matthias Kalverkamp

The Heinz Neumüller Foundation regularly awards scholarships to PhD Students from the University of Oldenburg. The foundation awarded Matthias with one of their four scholarships of 2016. We are pleased about the recognition of his achievements and the appreciation of his doctoral research topic.
