In the winter of 1980, students wrapped what is now A1-A4 - then known as the Allgemeines Verfügungszentrum (AVZ). Their role model: wrapping artist Christo. The "parcel" bore the inscription: "To the MWK, for the attention of Minister Pestel - Returned due to incomplete delivery!"
They were protesting against the cutback plans of the then Minister for Science and Culture, Dr Eduard Pestel. Instead of expanding the natural sciences, mathematics and sports facilities as recommended by the German Council of Science and Humanities, the state government was planning to make cuts and wanted to close the physics degree programme, among other things.
"A resounding slap in the face for the region" - that was how many associations and organisations in the north-west felt at the time and protested. With success, because just one month later the state government decided that the degree programme would not be cancelled. The natural sciences have long since not only been an integral part of the University of Oldenburg's repertoire, but are also characterised by excellent research and great commitment to teaching.
