Professor and Head of Chair of Sustainable Production Management

Prof. Dr. Christian Busse is a Full Professor and holds the Chair for Sustainable Production Management at the Carl von Ossietzky University since 2017. He completed his Habilitation at ETH Zurich in 2016, entitled Perspectives on the Management of Sustainability in Global Supply Chains. He received his Ph.D. from WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, Germany in 2010 (graded “summa cum laude”) and holds a master's degree in industrial engineering and management from the Technical University of Berlin that was granted in 2002 (with highest distinction). From 2010 to 2013, Prof. Busse was the responsible project manager for a major research project on sustainable supply chain management at EBS University for Business and Law in Wiesbaden, Germany. Prior to pursuing his Ph.D., he worked as a management consultant for The Boston Consulting Group in Düsseldorf, Germany.

His research interests relate to sustainable supply chain management, the interface between the organization and its environment, the research-practice gap and its mitigation, as well as methodological questions. To date, his research has appeared in Decision Sciences, International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management, Journal of Business Logistics, Journal of Industrial Ecology, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Organizational Research Methods, as well as other journals. A complete list of publications can be found here. With his research, Prof. Busse was the winner of the Chris Voss Best Paper Award of the European Operations Management Association (2015) and the Outstanding Paper Award of the International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management (2017 and 2018). Other studies were finalists for the Bernard J. La Londe Best Paper Award of the Journal of Business Logistics (2016), the Harold E. Fearon Best Paper Award of the Journal of Supply Chain Management (2017), as well as the Best Student Paper Award of the OSCM Division of the Academy of Management (two papers in 2018).

At Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Prof. Busse teaches courses at all levels on Operations and Supply Chain Management, Sustainability Management and Innovation Management. He has also taught at various institutions in Austria, Bulgaria, Spain, and Switzerland. 

Prof. Busse serves as an Associate Editor to the Journal of Supply Chain Management (Best Reviewer Award 2012). Moreover, he is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Operations Management. He was Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management that appeared in 2017 and used to serve as an Associate Editor to the Journal of Business Logistics (Outstanding Reviewer Award 2013) and the International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management (Outstanding Reviewer Award 2012).
