Digital and analogue games in history studies and teaching

Digital and analogue games set in historical contexts have long since ceased to be merely an integral part of popular culture; they are now an essential part of our culture of history and remembrance. There is a very active academic debate surrounding digital and analogue games with historical content. Nevertheless, digital and analogue games still rarely find their way into university seminar rooms or school classrooms. This is a missed opportunity, particularly because digital and analogue games are highly relevant to everyday life, allow for new forms of teaching, and promote skills and critical engagement with historical narratives.

Lucas Haasis, a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Oldenburg, and Patrick Heike, a teacher at Artland Gymnasium in Quakenbrück, jointly offer practical workshops and seminars on the potential applications of digital and analogue games in university teaching and history lessons. Both are members of the Working Group on History and Digital Games.
