Women in Science and Industry (2020)

The research training group 2226 “Chemical Bond Activation” invites you to participate in the online event Women in Science and Industry 2020.

Female speakers from different backgrounds will talk about their career in chemistry-related fields. Of course, a short summary on their research topic or their tasks will not be missing.

Please note: The panels will be held in English, except for the talks by Doris Fischer-Henningsen and Melanie Wallisch (German).

The following women are confirmed as speakers at the event:

Doris Fischer-Henningsen (Chief Editor, Chemie in unserer Zeit)

  • studied Chemistry at the Leibniz University Hannover, including a scientific stay at Imperial College London
  • PhD in Organic Chemistry at Leibniz University Hannover (1992)
  • gained further qualification in scientific journalism
  • since 1998: Chief Editor of the journal “Chemie in unserer Zeit”
  • award for literature of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (2010)
  • author of "Wenn die Chemie stimmt" (2018)

Melanie Wallisch (TÜV Nord)

  • studied Molecular Science at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg
  • PhD in Organic Chemistry in the working group of Jens Christoffers at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg (2017)
  • 2017-2019 Organic Chemist at ASM Research Chemicals, custom synthesis and process development for pharmaceutical agents
  • since 2019: Referee for conditioning of radioactive waste, TÜV NORD EnSys GmbH & Co. KG

Hanne Ballhausen (Fraunhofer MeVis)

  • studied and obtained her PhD in Mathematics at the University of Bremen (2011)
  • since 2011: scientific employee at Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MeVis
  • works on events for children and adolescents in STEM
  • development and validation of numeric simulations for medical image processing

Maraike Ahlf (BASF SE Ludwigshafen)

  • studied Chemistry at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg
  • PhD in Physical Chemistry in the working group of Katharina Al-Shamery (2012)
  • 2013-2017 Researcher at BASF Process Research and Chemical Engineering
  • since 2017 Global Product Manager of Inorganics at BASF Inorganics

Pooi See Lee (Nanyang Technological University Singapore)

  • PhD at National University of Singapore (2001)
  • since 2015 full professor at Nanygang Technological University Singapore
  • more than 30 patents filed/provisional applications
  • member of Materials Research Society
  • serves as the editorial board member of Advanced Energy Materials, Scientific Reports and Frontier

Cynthia M. Friend (Harvard University)

  • PhD in Chemistry at University of California, Berkeley (1981)
  • since 1998 Theodore William Richards Professor of Chemistry (Harvard University)
  • since 2013 director of the Rowland Institute for Science (Harvard University)
  • many national and international awards and honors, e.g. membership in the National Academy of Sciences (since 2019)
  • published over 260 papers in peer-reviewed journals

Talat S. Rahman (University of Central Florida)

  • B. Sc. in Physics at Karachi University (1969)
  • PhD in Physics at University of Rochester (1977)
  • since 2012: Pegasus Professor, University of Central Florida
  • since 2015: Co-leader, UCF Faculty Cluster on Rational Design of Catalysts for Energy Applications
  • visiting scientist in different research institutions e.g. in Germany, France, Spain and the US
  • over 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals
