S1P in bone metabolism
Bioactive lipids from the sphingolipid group, such as the signaling lipid sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), regulate the differentiation and growth of numerous body cells. S1P also appears to have a hitherto little-studied influence on bone metabolism and the regulation of bone-forming cells, the osteoblasts. Evidence from preliminary work by the pharmacology working group and from the literature point to the importance of S1P for new bone formation. The planned work will investigate molecular mechanisms by which S1P influences the growth and differentiation of bone-forming cells. Interested students with previous experience in cell culture are welcome to contact Dr Ulrike Meyer or Prof Rauch regarding a Master's thesis.
