A tribute to Hans Werner Henze – to mark his 100th birthday!

Wednesday, 1 July 2026, 8.00 pm

Institute of Music, A11 Auditorium

Schlagwerk Ossietzky

A collaborative concert with the Bremen Percussion Ensemble of the HfK Bremen and Schlagwerk Ossietzky from the University of Oldenburg.

Hans Werner Henze (1 July 1926 – 27 December 2012) is regarded as one of the most significant and influential contemporary composers of the 20th century. His oeuvre encompasses a wide range of musical styles and forms, including operas, orchestral works, chamber music, art songs and ballet music. Henze was renowned for his ability to blend different styles and traditions; his work is characterised by a profound humanity and his commitment to social issues.

With ‘Homage to Hans Werner Henze’, the Bremen Percussion Ensemble and Schlagwerk Ossietzky present a special tribute to this eminent composer to mark the centenary of his birth. The aim of this event is not only to commemorate Henze’s impressive body of work, but also to highlight its relevance and influence on contemporary music and society.

In this concert, the piece ‘Five Scenes from the Snow Country’ for marimba takes centre stage. This work is framed by compositions for percussion quartet, including four world premieres by composers who have worked in various generations following Henze and whose work is strongly influenced by him.

This combination of Henze’s work and the new compositions creates a fascinating dialogue between past and present, which underlines the timeless significance of Henze’s music whilst reflecting the development of contemporary music.

Performers:
– Bremen Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Olaf Tzschoppe
– Schlagwerk Ossietzky, conducted by Gereon Voß
– Hsin Lee, marimba

The forgotten ones - A new musical

Murder-Mystery-Musical

Various dates (see below)

Institute of Music, A11 auditorium

Strehsical-Company // Students

After the "Checked In" musical, it's time to get serious: in the new, self-written musical by the Strehsical Company, seven different characters meet on an island isolated from the mainland in England in the dark 1920s. The organisation based on the island offers a sanctuary for the treatment of war-related trauma. But what is supposed to be a place of healing and forgetting eventually becomes a scene of murder! Staff or patients - who could have committed the murder? And what other secrets are hidden on this island that should (not) be forgotten?
Look forward to an exciting musical performed by a large ensemble and a ten-piece live band in the A11 auditorium!

Performance dates: Sat 18 Apr (7pm), Wed 22 Apr (8pm), Sun 26 Apr (4pm), Tue 05 May (8pm), Fri 08 May (7pm), Sat 09 May (7pm)
