Graduate School Science, Medicine and Technology - OLTECH

Graduate School Science, Medicine and Technology

The aims of the Graduate School OLTECH are to train doctoral candidates in an international and interdisciplinary context. They learn to develop inventive research questions and new approaches to solving problems, to plan and manage projects and to present the results of their research. The early-career researchers learn about the relevant models and hypotheses in their field of science and can practise discussing them.

The curriculum combines several disciplines ensuring that doctoral researchers are able to integrate their scientific skills into a broader context. All curriculum elements serve to enhance the scientific independence and creativity of the doctoral candidates.

Membership in OLTECH is voluntary. It offers many advantages and opportunities. At the end of the doctoral period, members also receive a transcript of records, an overview of all achievements or a final certificate confirming the successful completion of a doctoral course or programme (according to examination regulations).

ICYMARE ICEBREAKER

On Monday, 18th September 2023 at 6 pm we will kick off the conference with our legendary ICYBREAKER. Join us at the Natural History Museum Oldenburg with free drinks and finger food. Get to know the ICYMARE Team and the other participants during Human bingo, where the first ten to complete it will have the opportunity to receive a prize.

 KEYNOTES

Every morning we will start the day with an exciting keynote speech, coffee and a little breakfast snack. Have look at our incredible speaker list:

  • Murat Eren, computer scientist, microbial ecologist and professor at the University of Oldenburg, talking about career development of Early Career Researchers in the marine sciences
  • Sandra Ketelhake from the Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) programme, introducing the vision and mission of the ECOP programme and other initiatives for knowledge exchange
  • Marie Fujitani, junior research group leader for deliberation, valuation and sustainability at the Centre for Tropical Marine Research, speaking about equity in marine research and policy
  • Annette Breckwoldt, social scientist at the Centre for Tropical Marine Research, presenting on her inter- and transdisciplinary research on Small Islands and her work as a Women- and Equal Opportunities Representative

SCIENTIFC PRESENTATIONS

At the core of the conference – of course – are the scientific presentations by our participants. In xx session, there will be xx talks. Join your peers and catch up with them in the various coffee breaks to learn more about their research.

POSTER SESSION

Join the relaxing atmosphere during the Poster Session on Tuesday evening. Grab a drink and take the chance to talk to other young scientists about their research. It will be a great evening with delicious food, inspiring chats and probably new friends.

SCIENCE SPEED MEETING

Interact with fellow young marine researchers in a relaxed setting beyond formal presentations or pitches: join us for the Science Speed Meeting!

To initiate a conversation, you can introduce yourself and share your academic and career journey, your passions, or even pose a fun question like: “If you were a marine species, which one would you be and why?” Our team will be there to help you get started.

ROUND TABLES

We also set aside a few minutes each day of the conference for you to interact and engage with other participants in round table discussions. Here, you can talk about topics such as mental health, scientific diving, and more. If you’re shy or not comfortable speaking in front of large groups, this is another way for you to interact, but with fewer people, allowing you to share your perspective.

WORKSHOPS

Be quick and save your spot in one of our divers and free workshops at Thursday afternoon. Doesn’t matter if you are interested in metrology or optical sensors, if you want to know more about diversity in science, organisms’ democracy or why it is important to feel stupid.

POST CONFERENCE PARTY

The grand closing party will take place at Friday evening. We will celebrate a full week of fantastic science, networking and inspiration! Don’t miss this great party with dancing & drinks rounding up  an exciting conference week.
