Seminar - Summer term 2022

History & Digital Games

Seminar at the University of Oldenburg in the summer semester 2022

Bachelor | Master | Teacher Training | Master's degree programme | Museum and Exhibition

Lecturers: Patrick Heike | Dr Lucas Haasis

Description: Digital games are an essential part of our culture of history and remembrance. There is a very active academic debate on digital games with a historical setting and historical content. However, games still rarely find their way into university seminar rooms or school classrooms. This is a missed opportunity, especially because digital games are highly relevant to the real world, allow for new forms of mediation and promote skills and a critical examination of historical images. They also arouse interest in different eras and historical topics. The seminar will focus, for example, on early modern games set in the context of the French Revolution, the Reformation, European expansion and colonialism.

The seminar offers insights into current research on digital games as well as practical components. The format of the event is a combination of classroom sessions at the university with one-hour online sessions the evening before. These online sessions consist of short lectures and Q&A on the topic "Questions to ..." with invited experts from the fields of history, history didactics, game studies, memorial sites and the international games industry, moderated by the organisers. The seminar is linked to the "Level 1" student conference on 27 and 28 May organised by the Working Group on History and Digital Games. Highlights of the event include a co-operation with a teacher and school class from IGS Flötenteich in Oldenburg, a co-operation with KMS-Bildung and Digitive as well as a workshop with the well-known Berlin games developer Jörg Friedrich (Paintbucket Games, Through the Darkest of Times). A joint visit to the Computer Museum Oldenburg is also planned. The seminar will conclude with a public evening event at the University of Oldenburg with presentations by the students. Previous knowledge or practical experience is not necessary to participate in the seminar. However, interest and a clear willingness to actively participate are required.
