Helmholtz virtual institute Polar Time

Project Description

PolarTime is a Helmholtz Virtual Institute, which joins research efforts of national and international institutions with the goal to build up an international Center of Excellence. This virtual institute studies the endogenous biological clocks and rhythms of invertebrate organisms inhabiting the Polar Ocean, as well as their regularities, interactions, and development

The investigation focuses on crustaceous species such as Antarctic krill, which play the key role in polar ecosystems. The Helmholtz Virtual Institute combines the expertise of the Alfred Wegener Institute with the core competence of another Helmholtz Institute, two German universities and two international partners.

The ICBM participates in this project through the research group of Prof. Bernd Blasius. His group will develop mathematical models to project environmental and anthropogenic impacts on the population dynamics and abundance of krill.
